Referees and Refereeing
Whether you are an active match official, a volunteer administrator or are considering taking up the whistle for the first time, you have a important role to play in the development of officiating within the local area. For current and potential officials, refereeing is a great way to give something back to the game you love, while also helping to widen participation in the sport. We want to offer all young people the opportunity to gain experience and get qualified.
We currently have the ‘Refereeing the 15-a-side game’ course available for a subsidised cost. This course offers an outstanding introduction to refereeing a game of rugby union and will equip you with the skills and confidence to do so effectively.
The Spirit of Rugby Loughborough project, have developed a refereeing programme for ambitious 16-24 year olds within the local area. The programme will provide the opportunity for referees to receive financial support to undertake a 15 a side referee qualification in Rugby Union, and to be up skilled to meet the required minimum standards to referee in the community. In return, the applicants will deliver refereeing hours contributing to the Spirit of Rugby project as a whole.
All participants will be allocated funding support to attend a 15 a side referee course in Rugby Union. Participants will be asked to obtain their own Disclosure & Barring Service check if necessary.
Participants should be prepared to pay £75 to Loughborough Sport towards the course costs. Courses will then be booked through the project and the full costs paid directly to the RFU through the Spirit of Rugby Project. If course is not completed, or coaching hours are not delivered, we reserve the right to request that the funds allocated are refunded.
Loughborough University and College students will pay a £50 deposit which will be refunded once they have completed the course and delivered the required coaching hours through the project. This cost is sponsored through the Coach and Volunteer Academy.
Please note that coaches will have their funding covered by the Spirit of Rugby if they:
• Attend all dates of the 15 a side Referee Qualification including assessment date
• Successfully complete the course by 19th Feb 2017
• Attend all minimum required standard courses that have not already been completed
• Deliver 20 hours of refereeing contributing to the Spirit of Rugby project and maintain a diary log of these hours
